Ocnophilia

The 'Ocnophilia' project (2005-2006) consists of three parts: a series of drawings, an animation film, and a book.

In the summer of 2005 I spend three months as an artist-in-residence at Foundation Kik in Kolderveen, a tiny village in the north of Holland. This residency was an initiative of the Fonds BKVB, as an experimental counterpart of their residency-program abroad.

During my residency I developed a cyclus of over 80 charcoal drawings. Out of a selection of these drawings, I constructed an animation film with the title Ocnophilia. Strictly speaking, it's not really animation; movement and action are suggested by slight camera movements, zooming in and out, and the oppressive soundtrack by Danny Weijermans. OCNOPHILIA is also the title of the book that was published simultaneously with the film. The book uses the same drawings as the film to arrive at a form of ‘sequential art’, and thus brings the film and the original drawings together.
