Julia/Guiliana
This project 'Julia/Guiliana' (2007-2008) consists of a series of drawings and an animation film.
The project is based on my fascination for films of the 60's and 70's, particularly those of Michelangelo Antonioni. It is also a personal hommage to an actress of that period, Monica Vitti.
The film is an intermediate form of animation, cinema and graphic novel. Much like 'Ocnophilia', the narrative of the film is build solely on still images, only this time it uses both photographs and drawings. The drawings portray the main character, the photographs her surroundings: modernistic architecture that is both shutting out and closing in. The photographs were taken in the European Quarter in Brussels by photographer Awoiska van der Molen. I also used some found material.
‘Julia/Guiliana’ is my second collaboration with composer and sounddesigner Danny Weijermans and with graphic designer Esther Kokmeijer, who both worked with me on ‘Ocnophilia’.
During the winter months of 2007 I worked as an artist-in-residence at Impakt in Utrecht. The film 'Julia/Guiliana' is co-produced by Impakt as part of their Impakt Works program.
